WORDS: SWEET OR SOUR?

WORDS: SWEET OR SOUR?
Contributed by Melanie Schurr
Jul 26, 2005

A reader recently wrote," I received your posting through DW in my
email today. I give praise to God for your posting at this point in my
life, as things are nearly as bad as they can get. But those words
lifted my spirit and gave me hope that all will be okay. God Bless
You!"

When I read these kind words I was, of course, happy to know that my
simple inspirational message had touched a person's heart in some small
way. However, I also had to wonder what type of words this reader had
been previously hearing that caused the words of a stranger to give him
or her such comfort.

Words are very powerful tools which can convey great emotion. They have
the ability to uplift, provoke, and give comfort; yet they also have
the ability to cause pain and sorrow. I am glad that I was able to
offer something positive to this reader's life through well-chosen
words, but what about those times in my life when I spoke without
considering the harmful effect of words spoken in anger or frustration?
I don't know about you, but I would rather my presence here on earth to
be a blessing to others, rather than a curse.

What about you? Have you, like me, sometimes said things to friends,
loved ones, associates or strangers on the street which you now regret?

Thankfully, God is a gracious God who is quick to forgive those who
seek His mercy.

Today, won't you consider choosing your words more wisely? While you
are at it, won't you also ponder inviting God into your life? Doing so
will permit the goodness of His love to flow in to your heart so that
what springs forth from your lips will bring peace, hope and joy,
rather than pain and sorrow.
