EVEN IN THE DARKNESS

It seemed so dark when I stepped in the autumn morning.
"There ought to be a law that says you don't have to get up until the
sun does," I said to Ricky and Lucy, my furry kids.
I always open the door slowly and shine a flash light into the yard.
My "deer" friends come down to munch on the seed left behind by the
birds who eat in such a hurry that they spill most of it.
It never goes to waste. Big birds go for big seed, little birds pick
at what they need. The seeds that fall are eaten by the Morning
Doves, chipmunks, squirrels and yes, the deer.
Still, I am cautious because Ricky dashes out into the yard on a
mission.
He's gotta get the bunnies, chase the birds and frighten anything
bigger than he is.
"This is our yard!" he declares barking into the darkness.
Me? I want to step into the light of day.
In the light of day I can see where I am, even when I'm not really
sure where I'll end up.
In the light of day, things appear to be brighter not because they
are, but because the light makes them appear to be.
In the light of day, I can see someone smile, almost exactly when I
need it.
In the light of day, I can I can see what is ahead of me, when to
turn, what to avoid and when to stop.
In the light of day, I can see the colors of the world and that makes
my journey more exciting.
In the light of day, I can clearly see my friends and avoid my
enemies.
"What good is darkness then?" I asked myself. "Why would God not
make 24 hours of light? What a waste of time darkness is!"
I stood there quietly looking around.
"Faith," I heard within my soul.
"Faith!" There it was again.
What does faith have to do with it?
"Darkness and light is the measure of faith," I heard.
Faith is knowing that God knows where you are at every moment and
where you are going...even in the darkness.
Faith is knowing that "things" reflect light making them appear to be
bright and of greater value than they may be. Having faith is being
the light, even in the darkness.
Faith is not needing to see a smile. Faith is the ability to "feel"
the smile of another, even in the darkness.
Faith is trusting that God will guide you when to turn, what to avoid
and when to stop, even in the darkness.
Faith is seeing the colors of the world in the starkness of winter,
in the absence of beauty, in the bleakness of illness, even in the
darkness.
Faith is knowing that you don't have to see friends to have them.
You are my "friends I've never met," even in the darkness.
Faith is the light within the unlit candle...even in the darkness.
"I believe in You!"
