28TH SUNDAY WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – C

OCTOBER 10, 2010
28TH SUNDAY WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – C

SECOND KINGS 5:14-17
So he went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan, as
Elisha had told him to do. And his flesh became clean once more like
the flesh of a little child. Returning to Elisha with his whole
escort, he went in and, presenting himself, said, 'Now I know that
there is no God anywhere on earth except in Israel. Now, please,
accept a present from your servant.' But Elisha replied, 'As Yahweh
lives, whom I serve, I will accept nothing.' Naaman pressed him to
accept, but he refused. Then Naaman said, 'Since your answer is "No,"
allow your servant to be given as much earth as two mules may carry,
since your servant will no longer make burnt offerings or sacrifice to
any god except Yahweh.

SECOND TIMOTHY 2:8-13
Remember the gospel that I carry, 'Jesus Christ risen from the dead,
sprung from the race of David'; it is on account of this that I have
to put up with suffering, even to being chained like a criminal. But
God's message cannot be chained up. So I persevere for the sake of
those who are chosen, so that they, too, may obtain the salvation that
is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. Here is a saying that you can
rely on: If we have died with him, then we shall live with him. If we
persevere, then we shall reign with him. If we disown him, then he
will disown us. If we are faithless, he is faithful still, for he
cannot disown his own self.

LUKE 17:11-19
Now it happened that on the way to Jerusalem he was travelling in the
borderlands of Samaria and Galilee. As he entered one of the villages,
ten men suffering from a virulent skin-disease came to meet him. They
stood some way off and called to him, 'Jesus! Master! Take pity on
us.' When he saw them he said, 'Go and show yourselves to the
priests.' Now as they were going away they were cleansed. Finding
himself cured, one of them turned back praising God at the top of his
voice and threw himself prostrate at the feet of Jesus and thanked
him. The man was a Samaritan. This led Jesus to say, 'Were not all ten
made clean? The other nine, where are they? It seems that no one has
come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.' And he said
to the man, 'Stand up and go on your way. Your faith has saved you.'

REFLECTION
There is so much for which we ought to be grateful to God. Anything we
have or anything we are, goes right back to the generous hand of our
loving God. When we were children, we were so thankful at Christmas to
those who filled our stockings with toys. Why shouldn't we be thankful
to God for filling our stockings or socks with legs? The gifts of God,
in body, mind and soul have been poured down upon us. Do our thanks
rise up to heaven for all that we have received?

When we have been sick and get well, we are so glad to be on our feet
again, that we forget to fall down upon our knees and thank God for
the gift of health that has been restored to us. God and the half
empty medicine bottles are both forgotten at one and the same time.
For sure, we don't mean to be ungrateful. As a rule, we are just
thoughtless. But this thoughtlessness, this ingratitude was the only
hurt about which Jesus complained. Without a murmur, Jesus accepted
the insults of the high priest, the scourging and crowning with thorns
by the soldiers, and the mockery and scorn of the mob. But in today's
gospel reading, this ever kind and patient heart of Jesus cried out at
the ingratitude of the lepers whom he had cured.

Ten lepers crawled to Jesus asking for nothing less than a miracle. He
sent them away restored in health. But, in their joy, they forgot the
source of their blessing. Only one of the ten lepers who had been
cured came back to thank Jesus. Jesus' heart ached.

Many people think of God only when trials come their way. While things
are going well, when our business is prospering, how often do we pause
to reflect on the goodness of God and to say a sincere "Thank You
Lord"? But when trouble strikes, it is quite a different story. We
rush to church; we implore God to have pity on us, we make special
novenas to our special saints or to our Mother of Perpetual Help. This
is not wrong.

What is wrong, however, is that we forget to thank God all the time
that He has been giving us spiritual and temporal gifts. When we run
to God and fall upon our knees in time of trouble, we expect God to
listen to our request the minute we make them. And yet, we have never
given God a thought and never said one "Thank You Lord" while things
were going well with us.

We all need to be more grateful to God every day of our lives, more
grateful than we have been in the past. We have so many reasons for
being grateful to God. What have we that we have not received from the
hands of God? When then are we so tongue-tied when it comes to
expressing our thanks to God? God's blessings are so many and so great
that every day should be a thanksgiving day. Now the best thanks that
we can give God is to try to deserve his goodness and his mercy a
little better by striving each day to live better and holier lives.

MIGRATING

MIGRATING
By Sally I. Kennedy
October 9, 2010

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in
barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more
valuable than they? Matthew 6:26

Peak color of the trees hadn't yet arrived, but the crisp, autumn air
had. Just made you want to reach out your hand and grab a handful of
its coolness and hang onto it.

Our friend stooped to pick up a caterpillar looking creature. "Web
worm", he exclaimed, as he pointed out the webby stuff on the ends of
some tree branches.

He explained these web worms cocoon in the silky mass every year.
Seems the nests can cover a cluster of leaves yet don't kill the tree.
They develop late in the season when deciduous leaves will soon be
shed naturally -.just in time for the annual migration of birds.

The migrating birds, from points north, fly to southern climates for
the winter. The web worms provide food for the journey, when the birds
peck into the filmy nest to eat the worms.

Maybe we don't "migrate", but we do travel. We each have an
individual, personalized journey through life. We are blessed to
have a heavenly Father who provides us with what we need for our life
journeys. Jehovah Jireh, the Lord will provide. (Gen.22:13-14)

Today I am thankful for migrating gifts from the Lord. For all of us…
birds included. May we have eyes to see what and where they are. In
Jesus name! Amen.
