It was over 20 years ago when she came home from her teaching job very upset one day. A case of German measles existed at school and she was pregnant. Would this affect her pregnancy? Immediately, our doctor was contacted and he prescribed some tests. "If the tests turn out positive, perhaps we should consider terminating this pregnancy," he advised.
Many questions flew through our minds. Humanly speaking, it did not look good with this second child soon to enter our world. We had a small, dingy apartment in the center of town, my job at $5.00 per hour and a car that had a broken under carriage.
Going against the doctor's advice found us racing a few months later to the hospital as labor pains had set in. On November 21, 1979, she delivered a huge 10 lb, 4 oz baby boy. The doctor called him the big 10-4. Reflecting on this chain of events, we still question the doctor's advice. In our family, Gideon is the only boy, now 6'3" tall and attending university. We love having him home and his sisters adore the big guy, who turns 20 today. How much we would have missed if the tests turned out positive and we had agreed to an abortion. Studies now reveal how woman (and men) suffer from the results of terminating pregnancies. Post Abortion Syndrome (PAS) is not discussed widely in media circles but many women experience its trauma. Fortunately, clinics have been set up to deal with the pain of PAS.
Mary and Joseph did not have it easy either when she was pregnant with Jesus. He had a poor income and many wondered why Mary was pregnant before she was married to Joseph. One day, by the river Jordan and at the start of Jesus' career, His Father echoed these words, "This is My beloved Son."This Jesus came to relieve suffering and rekindle hope with those who experience the pain and loss of their identity.
You may have lost a future, a job, a baby or your spouse. Jesus opens His arms to take you, hold and comfort you. He would love to share your sorrow, heal your pain and offer you hope. Psalm 91:14,15 promises, "Because he loves me, I will save him. I will protect those who know me.
They will call to me, and I will answer. I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them."
A Prayer: "Dear God thank You for sending Your beloved Son to this world to share my sorrow, heal and offer me hope. I thank You for not terminating me and closing my case. You are always there and now I ask that You will forgive the wrongs in my life. Yes, I have hurt You in many ways with my attitude and I now wish to dedicate my life in service to You. I ask that You will give me patience as I see You come through in my life. Amen."
