ANTIQUES

Thick dust covered the hand-hewn ridges in the simple cherry cupboard. Something priceless, this cabinet that my dad’s grandfather had lovingly made, as a gift for his bride.
It was a simple piece of furniture, with 2 doors on the bottom, and 2 shelves on top encased by very old glass doors. Originally it was made as a totally functional piece, to hold their dishes and kitchen ware, when they were first married.
The front was decorative, but the back a flimsy plywood. The hardware need replacing, too. When we moved it from my parent’s home to our home, a big chunk of molding was missing from the front.
I was reluctant to give the job of restoration to just anyone. Finally we found someone, in whom we had confidence, to restore and refinish this antique.
The refinisher was amazed at the incredible work on the original cabinet, and how my great-grandfather had handmade the beautiful grooves. Such detail! How painstakingly he must have worked on this, carving row after row of fine ridges. And obviously, with such love.
The workman ended up doing some of the repair needed, then hired a violin maker to do the ridges and grooves by hand, so all the trim would match.
When it was finished, they took a soft wax and rubbed it into the wood,so that it had a soft, clean lustre. Truly a treasure.
There are times we all need some restoration. Not just antiques. It’s best to not let just anyone do it! As a friend of mine says, “There is only one of you. so take good care of yourself”. Fortunately there is One we can trust for the outcome…. every time. Our heavenly Father.
That is good news.
PRAYER
"Lord, you gave your life for my sake, to redeem me from slavery to
sin and death. Help me to carry my cross with joy that I may
willingly do your will and not shrink back out of fear or cowardice
when trouble besets me."
