COACHES
A MountainWings Original
Aug 21, 2006

I sat in a restaurant as the football game played on television.

A group of men sat at a table nearby engrossed in the game.

I listened, not to the game but to the men watching.

They shouted at the quarterback, at the coach, at the players.

They questioned every play, every move, every decision of the

quarterback and coach.

“This is the way he SHOULD have done it,” each one intoned as

each had a different strategy and reasoning.

Each had an entirely different opinion of the perfect way to

play the game.

I realized as I looked at the men that they were in no shape to

play themselves. Bellies protruded and muscles were flabby.

They even seemed to get winded just shouting about the game.

They wouldn’t last three minutes on the field.

Too many times we have the quarterback and the coach syndrome.

We think we can do it better than the pros. We think we can

design and play the game of life better than the creator.

I could easily see the inadequateness of the men in the

restaurant if they played or coached the real game.

That’s what the movie, “Bruce Almighty” was about.

I realized long ago that I can’t coach as well as the master.

I don’t know the full strength and strategies of the opponent.

I don’t even know all of the weaknesses, dark places, and

strengths that reside within me.

The coach does.

If it were up to me, I would change some things about my

circumstances in life. From the looks of things it should make

things easier.

That’s from the same point of view as the men watching the game.

I’m sure there are plenty of times when the Super Bowl winners

cursed the coach. They complained against the pain, the fatigue

of the drills, the denials, the discipline, the punishment, and

the penalties the coach put them through.

Only when they walk down the field in victory do they realize

the wisdom and ultimate necessity of the things the coach did.

I’m just a player, struggling to win the prize.

I struggle against opposition, mainly internal.

I struggle with the training and the lessons that I must learn.

After many years, I’ve learned that the coach is infinitely more

qualified than I am to direct my life to obtain the prize.

The ultimate realization was that I’m not the coach.

Thank God!

PRAYER
"Lord Jesus, through your merciful love and forgiveness you bring healing and restoration to body, soul, and mind. May your healing power and love touch every area of my life -- my innermost thoughts, feelings, attitudes, and memories. Pardon my offences and transform me in the power of your Holy Spirit that I may walk confidently in your truth and righteousness."
